Mail on Sunday Payout Funds State School Law Scholarship at Derby 2026

A Mail on Sunday payout has inadvertently funded a new law scholarship for state-educated students at the University of Derby. The settlement, paid to Labour MP Catherine Atkinson after the newspaper falsely claimed she attended a private school, will now support local students pursuing legal careers.

Background of the Mail on Sunday Payout

In early July, the Mail on Sunday published an article alleging that Catherine Atkinson, MP for Derby North, had concealed a private school education from her Who's Who entry. Despite Atkinson correcting the journalists, the newspaper proceeded with the false claim, accompanied by a large photograph. The MP, a former barrister who attended Sacred Heart High School, a Catholic comprehensive in Hammersmith, west London, threatened legal action. The Mail on Sunday later apologised and paid approximately £5,000 in damages and legal costs.

Atkinson's Response and Scholarship Establishment

Atkinson, who built a 17-year career as a barrister, decided to use the settlement to fund scholarships for local law students at the University of Derby. The scholarship will specifically support students from state schools in Derby, helping them overcome financial barriers to legal education.

"I am grateful for the state-school education that helped me build a 17-year career as a barrister," said Atkinson. "The claim that I had concealed a private education from my constituents was false. I am using the money from this settlement to support students from Derby's state schools in beginning their own careers in law. Strengthening our justice system means taking seriously who gets the opportunity to work in it. When financial barriers keep capable students out of the profession, we all lose."

Impact on State-Educated Law Students

The scholarship aims to address the underrepresentation of state-educated individuals in the legal profession. According to recent data, only 17% of barristers in England and Wales attended state schools, compared to 83% of the general population. This disparity highlights the importance of initiatives like the one funded by the Mail on Sunday payout.
