France and Spain Wildfires: Over 250,000 Evacuated, Death 2026

The France and Spain wildfires have escalated into a major crisis, with over 250,000 people evacuated and at least one confirmed death near Valencia. Firefighters across both nations are battling blazes that have forced mass displacements, military mobilizations, and international concern.

Deadly Wildfires Sweep Across France and Spain

In France, nearly 197,000 people have been evacuated near Bordeaux, including suburbs of the city. The French armed forces deployed 1,500 soldiers to support firefighters, assist evacuations, and provide medical care, transport, accommodation, and logistical support. Specialist equipment such as bulldozers, helicopters, drones, and A400M military aircraft equipped for aerial firefighting are being used to contain the flames.

Spain reports 70,000 evacuations from villages west of Madrid. A man was found dead in a car in a ravine in Manises, near Valencia. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez described the wildfire situation near Madrid as “complex” due to unpredictable winds, even though temperatures have dropped.

Military Response and International Aid

France’s Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu convened a new government crisis meeting. Meanwhile, Scotland’s first minister requested military aid from the UK government as a separate wildfire in the Cairngorms national park—burning for 11 days—forced evacuations in remote areas. More than 500 firefighters are tackling that blaze.

In Spain, over 400 emergency personnel, 50 ground units, and 12 aerial units (fire engines and helicopters) are working to contain the fire west of Madrid. Residents like Rodika, 60, from Fresnedillas de La Oliva, described being evacuated with only moments' notice.
