France recorded more than 5,700 excess deaths during its June 2023 heatwave, according to the French national health agency. The extreme temperatures claimed lives across all age groups, with the elderly most affected.
Excess Mortality During the June Heatwave
Between 17 June and 2 July, France saw 5,764 excess deaths—a 36% rise in mortality. Over half of these occurred between 25-27 June, and two-thirds were among people aged 75 and older. The agency noted these were "all-cause" deaths, though heat is the likely driver.

Comparison with Previous Years
| Period | Excess Deaths | Excess Mortality Rate |
|---|---|---|
| June 2023 (17 June – 2 July) | 5,764 | 36% |
| Summer 2022 (June – August) | 5,722 | ~10% |
The 2023 June heatwave alone nearly matched the entire summer of 2022 in excess fatalities, underlining the growing threat of climate change.
Key Takeaways
- Over 5,700 excess deaths in just 16 days during France's June heatwave.
- Elderly (75+) accounted for two-thirds of fatalities.
- Spain also faced record wildfires, burning 32,000 hectares.
- European scientists warn that human-driven climate change intensifies extreme weather.
- Public awareness and preventive measures are critical.
Impact on Southern Europe
Spain grappled with its largest wildfire of the year in Guadalajara, forcing evacuations and confinement of 14 villages. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that Spain had already seen 22 major wildfires in 2023—four times the previous year's pace—and over 100,000 hectares burned. He urged the public to not trivialize the climate emergency.
Europe is the fastest-warming continent, and scientists link rising temperatures to more frequent, intense heatwaves. The French health agency advises staying hydrated, checking on vulnerable neighbors, and avoiding outdoor activity during peak heat.
FAQ
What caused the excess deaths in France during June 2023?
The excess deaths are attributed to a severe heatwave that hit France from June 17 to July 2, with temperatures soaring above 40°C. The majority of victims were elderly individuals with existing health conditions.
How many excess deaths were recorded in the June heatwave?
The French national health agency reported 5,764 excess deaths during the 16-day period, a 36% increase over expected mortality.
Are these deaths directly linked to heat?
While the agency stated that none have been "clearly linked" to heat alone, the temporal correlation and epidemiological patterns strongly suggest heat stress as a primary factor, especially among the elderly.
What can people do to stay safe during a heatwave?
Stay indoors during peak heat (11 a.m. – 4 p.m.), drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol and caffeine, use fans or air conditioning, and check on elderly or isolated neighbors.
