France Wildfires: Climate Crisis Forces Mass Evacuations 2026

The ongoing wildfires in France and Spain represent a stark reminder of the climate crisis, with massive blazes near Bordeaux forcing nearly 220,000 people to flee and threatening further destruction as another heatwave approaches.

Wildfires in France: A Growing Emergency

Authorities in France are battling a huge wildfire in the Gironde region, which has consumed an area four times the size of Paris. Windy conditions over the weekend made containment efforts nearly impossible, and the fire now sits just 15–20 miles from the city of Bordeaux, which has a population of 268,000. Nearly 260,000 people have been evacuated across France, including 36,000 forced to leave another blaze in the Landes region.

Spain Also Hit Hard by the Climate Crisis

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez warned that the Iberian peninsula is suffering the effects of the climate emergency. Fires west of Madrid are being brought under control, but Sánchez spoke of “difficult hours.” In Spain, 116,000 residents have been evacuated this week, bringing the total number of people displaced across both countries to about 375,000.

What Makes These Wildfires Unprecedented?

Sophie Brocas, prefect of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, noted that the highly unpredictable nature of this wildfire is a phenomenon never seen before in France.
