Tour de France Director Rejects Bias Claims, Defends Tests 2026

Tour de France director Christian Prudhomme has strongly rejected accusations of bias towards French riders, defending the independent night-time drug tests carried out during the race. Speaking at the start of stage 18 in Voiron, Prudhomme insisted that the International Testing Agency’s (ITA) practices do not favor any rider. “We fought to have an independent agency, and now we have one,” he said. “I have no desire whatsoever to interfere with their work. Not only am I not informed, I must not be informed.”

Accusations of Favoritism

Slovenian rider Matej Mohoric of Bahrain Victorious implied that French teenager Paul Seixas had received preferential treatment from the ITA. Mohoric stated on Tuesday, “it would be good to guarantee equal treatment for everyone. After all, we know that this French rider, who is well placed in the general classification, didn’t undergo that night-time test.” The ITA stressed its independence from French anti-doping authorities on Wednesday, and Prudhomme underlined the importance of such autonomy.

Independent Anti-Doping Controls

The Tour de France organization has long pushed for an independent testing body. Prudhomme noted, “The UCI has ensured that there is now an independent agency. I find out about testing at exactly the same time as you do – or often even after you do. I’m not informed beforehand, and nor should I be.” Both current race leader Tadej Pogacar and rival Jonas Vingegaard were tested at 5am and 2am respectively last Sunday, described by the UCI as an “exceptional measure, reserved for limited and justified circumstances.”

Historical Context of Drug Testing in the Tour

Prudhomme reminded reporters that in 2008, the Tour was organized without the UCI, under the French Cycling Federation, specifically to allow independent anti-doping controls. This history underscores the race’s commitment to fair play, regardless of rider nationality. The ITA’s role is to ensure equal treatment for all competitors, a principle Prudhomme defends vigorously.
