Bad Magpie is an upcoming indie game from Milktooth that turns a wounded corvid's chaos into a poignant metaphor for distraction and abandonment. The debut trailer already signals a mix of gleeful anarchy and melancholy, with the protagonist calling out to a flock that has a conspicuous gap in formation.
The Story Behind Bad Magpie
Designer Daisy Fernandez drew inspiration from a real-life moment during the 2020 lockdowns: lying in the grass, she watched a V-shaped bird formation with one missing spot. That image stayed with her, eventually becoming the emotional core of the game. Alongside former State of Play Games colleagues George Batchelor and Catherine Unger, Fernandez evolved an early idea about a duck in love with a star into a narrative about a magpie seeking shiny objects as a coping mechanism. The team explicitly acknowledges the shadow of Untitled Goose Game, but their corvid offers a darker, more introspective take.

Gameplay: A Collectathon with Existential Weight
Bad Magpie is designed as a collectathon, but one that meta-commentates on how games distract us from broader worries. The magpie gathers treasures not out of pure mischief, but as a way to fill an emotional void. Players navigate environments solving puzzles and causing controlled chaos, all while the protagonist slowly unravels her own abandonment issues.
