Game of Thrones: The Mad King Review – Critics Call It Epic 2026

The Game of Thrones: The Mad King stage adaptation has arrived, and critics are already calling it an epic theatrical event that rivals even Christopher Nolan's cinematic ambitions. This RSC production, written by Duncan Macmillan and directed by Dominic Cooke, brings George RR Martin's universe to life in a way that satisfies die-hard fans while welcoming newcomers.

Why Game of Thrones: The Mad King Is a Must-See

The production reimagines the events leading up to Robert's Rebellion, focusing on the descent of King Aerys II Targaryen into madness. With a cast of 36 and a reconfigured main auditorium, the audience is immersed in the action from all sides. The cruciform stage and the coronet-style arch create a visionary space that feels both ancient and otherworldly.

Critics Praise the Spectacle

Dominic Cavendish of the Telegraph highlights the magnificent metallic steeds operated by handlers, reminiscent of War Horse. The opening wordless sequence, with its inordinate procession of arrivals, conjures a due aura of wonder and clanging foreboding. Alice Saville of the Independent notes that dragon puppets and vast stomping horses stalk in shadowy slow motion, as if embedded deep in the world's collective memory.

Plot and Themes: A Political Thriller

The story centers on the various Brutus-like figures plotting to overthrow the paranoid and delusional king. Critics like Mark Lawson of the Guardian point out that the play references not only Trumpian instability but also wider international crises, including the fragility of heads of state and climate change. The UK's concern about the endurance of a royal bloodline adds another layer, making it a timely political commentary.

Accessible for Newcomers

Sarah Crompton of WhatsOnStage praises the production for tying up plot points from the Song of Ice and Fire franchise in ways that satisfy avid fans while creating a narrative clear enough for complete newbies. This balance is a rare achievement, making the play a perfect entry point for those who haven't read the books or watched the TV series.
