The MLS playoff overhaul is set to transform the league's postseason with a double-elimination format, 20 teams, and reseeding. Major League Soccer is planning a significant restructuring of its playoff system, according to multiple league and club sources. These changes, slated for 2028, aim to increase competitiveness and fan engagement.
Proposed Changes to the MLS Playoff Format
The new format would debut alongside the league's shift to a fall-to-spring schedule. The playoffs would start in late April and conclude with MLS Cup on May 21, 2028. A key feature is the expansion to 20 teams, with the top eight earning a double-elimination advantage.

Double-Elimination and Reseeding
In the proposed system, the top eight teams from a combined single table would enter a double-elimination round. A win in this round advances directly to the quarter-finals. Teams would be reseeded after each round, ensuring higher seeds maintain competitive and hosting advantages throughout the playoffs.
Play-In Round and Team Distribution
Eight of the 20 qualifying teams would participate in a play-in round, with four advancing to join the top eight in a 16-team final field. The distribution of spots would not be even across divisions; instead, the best 20 teams overall from a single table would qualify.

Fans can expect a more intense and unpredictable playoff run, with higher stakes for top seeds. The reseeding mechanism ensures that the best teams have a clear path, while the play-in round gives more clubs a shot at glory.
