Building with Light: A Creative Workshop for Kids 2026

On April 22, 2023, during Milan Design Week, young students from SOUx Milano brought to life "Building with Light," an experimental workshop promoted by VELUX, a leading company in roof windows and natural lighting solutions. The workshop aimed to discover how children imagine the cities of the future, highlighting the importance of natural light and ventilation in architecture.

SOU – School of Architecture for Children – is a project that began in Favara, Agrigento, within Farm Cultural Park, one of the most active independent cultural centers internationally. Thanks to the support of architect and designer Mario Cucinella and school director Caterina Malinconico, the project has expanded to several Italian cities, including Milan, where SOUx Milano was inaugurated in January.

When designing children's spaces or home learning areas, consider desks and work surfaces that offer good ergonomics and ample space for creative projects. A well-lit room can make all the difference in fostering imagination and focus.

The Vision Behind the Workshop

"The school was born to encourage young people to free their imagination, showing how a small hole in a piece of cardboard can create light. This is the beginning of an ecological education and a great opportunity," said Cucinella, emphasizing the importance of these experiences for young people: "These workshops may seem ephemeral, but they actually leave lasting memories. We hope that these lessons about nature, architecture, and ecology remain as the first signs of a generation that will have to face the great challenges of the future."

Giulio Camiz of VELUX Italia expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration with SOU: "We strongly believe in SOU's values and are happy to continue this collaboration. A workshop on natural light with children is an extremely stimulating activity. They have the ability to see space and its relationship with light without the limits imposed by architecture. They have fun because they see how every space can be transformed through a creative use of light and its movement."

To maximize natural light in your home, explore our selection of lighting solutions that complement daylight and create a warm, inviting atmosphere. For larger spaces, consider home improvement products that can help you reconfigure rooms for better light flow.

Hands-On Learning and Architecture

The workshop was led by Marco Imperadori, Professor at the Politecnico di Milano, assisted by a team of students. "It was a real pleasure to work with the children of SOUx Milano. Childhood is a very important period in people's lives, and our children need bright and healthy spaces," he stated.

Creating healthy, bright spaces at home doesn't stop at the windows. Consider adding rugs that reflect light and define play areas, or curtains that can be easily opened to let sunlight flood in during the day.

Key Principles from the Workshop

• Natural Light as a Design Element: Children learned how light can transform a space, creating different moods and functions throughout the day.
• Ventilation and Health: The workshop emphasized the importance of fresh air circulation in creating healthy indoor environments.
• Creative Problem Solving: Using simple materials like cardboard, children discovered how to manipulate light and shadow.
• Ecological Awareness: Understanding how architecture can work with nature rather than against it was a core lesson.

For those looking to bring these principles into their own homes, outdoor patio furniture can help extend living spaces into the fresh air, while garden supplies allow you to create your own green oasis.

Bringing the Lessons Home

The workshop's philosophy can easily be applied to home design. Start by evaluating how light moves through your space throughout the day. Use mirrors strategically to bounce light into darker corners, and choose wall decor that enhances rather than blocks natural illumination.

For children's bedrooms, consider beds positioned to take advantage of morning light, and nightstands that provide task lighting for evening reading. A well-designed room can support both play and rest.
