For dry, warm towels every time, this DIY project is perfect: a homemade towel rack that sits over your radiator. By placing towels near the heating element, they stay constantly bathed in warm air. This DIY home improvement rack keeps towels at the ideal distance—about 4 inches above the radiator for the top bars, and even closer for the front bars, which are great for larger items like bath sheets.
The structure consists of two 15mm thick laminated chipboard sides connected by aluminum tubes—all materials you can find at any hardware store.

Cutting and Preparing the Tubes
Using a hacksaw, cut the tubes to the internal width of the rack. The larger tubes should be about 12 inches longer so they protrude from the sides. Inside the two side panels, insert pairs of 10mm dowels for each short tube. To align the holes perfectly, use cap markers.
Dowels and Knobs
On the front edge of the sides, drill 15mm holes with a Forstner bit for the long tubes—one aligned with the top row of dowels and one about halfway down. From a 12mm hardwood dowel, cut pairs of 40mm cylinders for each long tube (in this case, 2 tubes and 4 cylinders). Drill a 10mm blind hole along the vertical axis of each cylinder, then repeat for the wooden spheres. Join the spheres and cylinders with a dowel. Connect the sides by fitting the thin tubes over the dowels (a mallet helps). Slide the 15mm tubes through their holes and attach the sphere stems at the ends—glue them if you prefer a non-removable rack.
Materials Checklist
- Laminated chipboard (15mm thick)
- Aluminum tubes (various diameters)
- 10mm and 12mm hardwood dowels
- Wooden spheres (for decorative knobs)
- Wood glue (optional)
Assembly Tips
For a sturdy finish, ensure all holes are drilled precisely. If you want the rack to be disassemblable for storage, skip the glue on the sphere stems. This project also pairs well with bathroom vanities for a coordinated look.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use this rack for other items besides towels?
Absolutely! It's great for drying delicate clothing, socks, or even small linens. Just avoid overloading it to maintain airflow.
What if I don't have a radiator?
This design can be adapted for use with outdoor heating units or placed near a vent. Alternatively, use it as a standalone drying rack in a sunny spot.
How do I clean the wooden parts?
Wipe with a damp cloth and mild soap. Avoid soaking the wood. For a longer life, consider sealing with a clear varnish.
Can I paint or stain the wood?
Yes, use a heat-resistant paint or stain if the rack will be near a radiator. This allows you to match it with your wall decor.
Is this project suitable for beginners?
Yes, with basic tools like a hacksaw, drill, and mallet. It's a great weekend project for anyone interested in home improvement.
