Building a wooden stilt house is a fairly simple, though time-consuming, project. The reason to build one lies in the fact that a wooden playhouse, perhaps supported by the sturdy branches of an ancient tree, has been every child's dream. Among them is Alberto, the son of our reader Massimo Idda, who sent us the documentation for building a wooden stilt house.
How to Design a Stilt House

In projects like this, making drawings is essential. Drawings 1 and 2 give an idea of the solutions for the front side of the stilt house (entrance, window, and positioning of the access ladder). Drawings 3 and 4 show two hypothetical solutions for the back wall of the house that were not realized (in the end, there are no openings on the facade), while on one of the side walls, a window identical to the one on the front wall was eventually made, even though it wasn't planned in the original design.
Garden Dominance
There was already a large tree in the garden, and the temptation to build the structure among its branches was strong. However, the feeling that the tree might suffer, the orientation of the very dense branches, and finally the lack of good support on one side, led to the decision to build a stilt house with its own supports. For your own backyard project, consider browsing our garden supplies for tools and materials to make the job easier.
Making the Concrete Footings
1. To find the correct positions for the excavations, you need to arm yourself with a chalk line, stakes, and a tape measure; measuring the two diagonals of the square, which must be identical, indicates the regularity of the polygon. The excavations measure 80x80 cm, to a depth of about 50 cm.
2. After pouring the concrete, but while it is still fresh, place a small formwork of boards nailed together in the center of each one, forming a square of about 300 mm per side. The four formworks must be positioned correctly, i.e., well aligned with each other. For the structural integrity of your build, you might also need some home improvement essentials like fasteners and sealants.
Building the Elevated Cabin
Once the concrete footings have set, the next step is to erect the wooden posts that will serve as both supports and structural columns. These are then framed together to create the platform for the cabin floor. The walls are built on the ground and then lifted into place, making the process more manageable. Adding a secure railing around the platform is crucial for safety.
Furnishing the Interior
After the structure is complete, the fun part begins: furnishing the interior! A small table and chairs are perfect for tea parties and drawing. Consider adding a cozy rug for comfort. You can find excellent options in our rugs collection to make the space feel warm and inviting. For storage, a small bookcase or shelving unit can hold toys and books.
How to Finish the Stilt House
Finishing touches are what turn a simple structure into a magical hideaway. Sand all wooden surfaces to prevent splinters. Apply a weatherproof stain or paint to protect the wood from the elements. Install simple curtains for the windows to give the kids their own private space. Adding some wall decor like a small sign or a chalkboard can personalize the space.
Lighting and Final Details
For those late afternoon play sessions, consider a battery-operated lantern or some lighting options that are safe for a wooden structure. A small mirror on the wall adds a fun element. Outside, you can place a couple of outdoor patio furniture pieces like small chairs or a bench for the kids to sit on when they're not inside.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What type of wood is best for a stilt house?
Pressure-treated lumber is highly recommended for the posts and frame as it resists rot and insects. Cedar and redwood are also excellent natural choices for their durability and weather resistance. For the deck and walls, exterior-grade plywood or tongue-and-groove boards work well.
How high off the ground should the stilt house be?
A height of 4 to 6 feet (1.2 to 1.8 meters) is common for children's playhouses. This provides enough space underneath for play or storage while remaining safe. Always ensure the railing is high enough (at least 3 feet) and properly spaced to prevent falls.
Do I need a permit to build a stilt house in my backyard?
Yes, in most municipalities, a structure of this size requires a building permit. Check with your local building department for specific regulations regarding setbacks, height restrictions, and structural requirements. It's always better to be safe and compliant.
Can I build a stilt house without concrete footings?
While possible, concrete footings provide the most stable and long-lasting foundation. Alternatives include using ground screws or metal piers, but these may not be suitable for all soil types. For a permanent and safe structure, concrete footings are the gold standard. For related outdoor structures, you might be interested in our sheds or pergolas for your yard.
How do I make the stilt house safe for my children?
- Ensure all railings are sturdy and have vertical balusters spaced no more than 4 inches apart to prevent children from slipping through.
- Use rounded or sanded edges on all corners to minimize injury from bumps.
- Install a safety gate at the top of the ladder if the house is high.
- Regularly inspect the structure for loose screws, rotting wood, or other hazards.
- Use non-toxic paints and stains.
