Scrolling through your projects before going to print, I thought—once again and always with amazement—about how wood can free the imagination when creating useful, curve-rich objects that, in the case of DIY productions, are absolutely unique.

Versatile, strong, beautiful to look at, and pleasant to the touch, wood has been used by humans since the Paleolithic era to create tools, weapons, arrows, and shelters; early civilizations built ships that enabled the expansion of empires, and later complex structures like bridges, mills, floors, and roofs of buildings—which, after all, are still made today. With the Industrial Revolution, this material lost some of its predominance in favor of metals and plastics, but today, also due to attention to sustainability, wood is once again highly appreciated. The choice is not limited to solid wood; there are boards with characteristics suitable for every purpose: from the oldest laminated wood, patented in 1905, to MDF, born in the 1920s in the United States, and many other types of wood with different treatments. In recent years, there has been a significant evolution in machines for working it, and battery-powered tools—besides being convenient—have become very high-performing.
But the appreciation and amazement at what can be done with this material, perhaps even reclaimed, come from the lamp created by Daniele Rusconi on page 74, who was inspired by a small wooden box with carved hearts, which became the lampshade. Then, with a turned curtain rod support, he made the spacer, and with a circular piece of MDF, properly finished, he made the base of the lampshade. The project by Luciano Cacciatore on page 88 is also truly original: for his little grandson, he wasn't satisfied with an industrial production high chair, too static and boring; he precisely built a rocking high chair entirely in wood, a warm, safe, and robust material (as he himself defines it when talking about his choice), a high chair that with this function is more fun for the child.
I know I'm going against the grain by praising wood like this; the materials that seem fundamental, for the present and the future, are rare earths, something perceived as mysterious and far from us, but...
