A groundbreaking expedition is set to launch next month, sending a team of scientists and crew into the heart of the Arctic aboard a futuristic floating laboratory. The mission, led by the Tara Ocean Foundation, aims to document the fragile and largely unknown ecosystems of the central Arctic Ocean before they are irrevocably altered by climate change.

Six scientists and six crew members will travel to Kirkenes, a remote Arctic town in Norway near the Russian border, to begin an eight-month odyssey. They will board the French-built Tara polar station, a 26-metre-long, 16-metre-wide vessel designed to be frozen into pack ice and drift slowly over the north pole to Greenland.

Mission to the Unknown

The expedition will overwinter through months of complete darkness and temperatures as low as -50C (-58F). The crew will be isolated, with rescue potentially taking a week in an emergency. Their goal is to gather data on the impact of climate breakdown and pollution on the central Arctic Ocean’s unique ecosystems.

“We are losing species before we have time to discover them,” says Romain Troublé, executive director of the Tara Ocean Foundation. “In the next 20 years, everything will shift.” For his work, Troublé was awarded the prestigious Shackleton medal this week.

A Legacy of Exploration

This expedition follows in the footsteps of historic Arctic voyages. In 2006, an earlier iteration of the Tara schooner completed a transpolar drift, only the second such expedition since Norwegian explorer Fridtjof Nansen completed the first in his ship, the Fram, in 1893-96. The current mission builds on that legacy with more funding and advanced technology.

The design of the polar station came from Agnès Troublé and Étienne Bourgois, while Romain Troublé raised the required €26 million (£22 million) funding and organized the mission. Scientists from 15 countries will collaborate on this ambitious project.

Key Challenges and Goals

  • Documenting unknown species: The Arctic Ocean’s biological aspects remain a “blank sheet” to discover, according to Troublé.
  • Overcoming extreme conditions: Months of darkness, freezing temperatures, and isolation pose significant human and logistical challenges.
  • Understanding climate impact: The data will reveal how pollution and warming are affecting one of the world’s most fragile ecosystems.

Scientific Significance

In 2023, Nature magazine described Troublé and Bourgois as “visionary thinkers.” An editorial compared the continuous two-year expedition of the first Tara vessel to Charles Darwin’s voyage on HMS Beagle, noting its contributions to theories on reef formation and biodiversity.

The current mission will be the first stage of a planned continuous expedition. Researchers hope to fill critical gaps in knowledge about the central Arctic Ocean, which remains one of the least-studied regions on Earth. “We know pretty well the depth, the physics of the Arctic,” Troublé says. “But we have no clue about the life, the biological aspect.”

FAQ

What is the Tara polar station?

The Tara polar station is a futuristic, floating laboratory built in France. It is a 26-metre-long, 16-metre-wide vessel designed to be frozen into pack ice and drift across the Arctic Ocean.

Why is this Arctic expedition important?

This expedition is crucial because the central Arctic Ocean is one of the most fragile and least-studied ecosystems. Scientists aim to document species before they disappear due to climate change and pollution, providing data to inform conservation efforts.

How long will the mission last?

The initial mission is planned for eight months, including overwintering through the polar night. It is the first stage of a longer, continuous expedition that will gather data over several years.
