Road Trip: Unique Route from Monterrey to San Francisco (5H)

A road trip from Monterrey to San Francisco is the ultimate adventure, blending stunning landscapes, cultural gems, and bucket-list destinations. As someone who has navigated this epic 5h cross-border journey, I can tell you that it’s more than just a long drive—it’s an unforgettable experience that takes you through Mexico, Texas, Arizona, California, and some of the most breathtaking sights in North America.

Starting in Monterrey, Mexico, you’ll pass through Laredo, Texas, the busiest U.S.-Mexico border crossing. Proper travel documents—a valid passport, visa, and car insurance—are essential. Once in Texas, consider a detour to San Antonio for a taste of its historic charm before heading west on Interstate 10. The drive through Arizona offers must-see stops like the Sonoran Desert, while California’s Highway 1 transforms the journey into a coastal dream, with stops in Los Angeles, Big Sur, and Santa Cruz before reaching San Francisco.

Whether you’re in it for the scenic landscapes, iconic cities, or legendary road trip stops, this route has it all. I’ll break down the best driving tips, safety advice, budget-friendly stays, and must-visit attractions so you can hit the road fully prepared. Buckle up—this Monterrey to San Francisco road trip is about to become your next great adventure.

Road Trip Itinerary from Monterrey to San Francisco

Our flight was leaving at 11pm so we had practically the whole day to enjoy a quiet trip along the Pacific Coast. We left Monterey heading north along Monterey Bay and continued on HW1 towards San Francisco.

Here are the details of the route:

– Starting point : Monterey
– Ending point : San Francisco
– Total miles : 115
Estimated time : 5 hours
– Stops along the way: There are different stops at viewpoints to see beaches and cliffs (which are on the left of the road), or small towns. We stopped at a few of them, at Pigeon Point Lighthouse , before stopping to eat a piece of barbecue at  Highway 1 Brewing Company and at  Surfers Beach in El Granada because a few whales were greeting the surfers.

This is the map of the route:

What to see on the route between Monterrey and San Francisco

This is one of those routes where you don't need to plan your stops, but the best thing is to just let yourself go along the road calmly and stop where your senses dictate. In this way we made some stops at viewpoints, beaches, villages, lighthouses and the occasional cafe, where we began to realise that in a few days we were going to leave this country that, strangely, has fascinated us.

And one of the reasons we'll miss the US (of course) is the barbecue. As if it were a gift from fate, when it was almost time for lunch we saw a sign on our right advertising a place where they prepare authentic
American barbecue ! Not a bad place to spend our last meal on the West Coast. The place is called  Highway 1 Brewing Company and, in addition to BBQ, mac and cheese and corn bread , they make their own craft beer.

With our glasses full we hit the road but it didn't take us long to make another stop, the scenery was worth it.

On the coast stands a lighthouse in an impressive setting: it is the Pigeon Point Lighthouse , and it is not a bad place to digest. That is if it were not for the cars that stopped to do their scheming in the purest Breaking Bad style.

The afternoon is drawing near and our remaining time on the Pacific Coast is drawing to a close, but the ocean has one last surprise in store for us…

Driving through the town of El Granada we see cars stopping on the sides of the road, people looking at the water where some surfers take advantage of the good weather to take out their boards. But what draws our attention is not them, but the group of whales that have come to greet us!

How did they find out? Do they follow our Instagram Stories ? Either way, they were there raising their tails, “Have a good trip to you too!”

We arrived at San Francisco airport after 14 days, traveling 3,637 miles (almost 6,000 km). Four of us left and two of us returned (we didn't lose them or abandon them XD). And now we're heading to the next destination: Miami . But that's another story.

This was our route from Monterey to San Francisco, with the essential stops to make. Did you like it?
