Moira Deeming has been disendorsed as a Victorian Liberal Party candidate for the upcoming state election, marking a dramatic turn in her political career. The state party executive voted on Friday to remove her from the number 1 position in the Western Metropolitan region, despite her dropping an eleventh-hour legal challenge against the party. This decision reshapes the Liberal Party's ticket and raises questions about Deeming's future in politics.
Timeline of the Disendorsement
The controversy began in May when Deeming accused fellow Liberal MP Matthew Guy of grabbing her in a headlock. CCTV footage later showed Guy placing his hand on her upper back, and police found no offence detected after investigation. Deeming later claimed she misunderstood the meaning of headlock, but the incident fractured party relations.

In June, Guy demanded a public apology from Deeming, stating outside parliament: “Moira Deeming owes me a public apology.” The dispute escalated, leading Deeming to launch a supreme court challenge against party president Brian Loughnane to prevent further action. She withdrew that challenge on Wednesday, but the party moved forward with disendorsement.
Impact on the Upcoming State Election
While Deeming remains in the opposition party room, she will lose her seat as an MP after the November election unless she runs as an independent. The Liberal Party statement said: “The Liberal Party considers the matter resolved and we look forward to continuing to outline our plan to provide the fresh start Victoria needs.”
Key Details of the Decision
- Disendorsement vote held by the state executive on Friday afternoon
- Deeming removed from the number 1 position in Western Metropolitan region
- She retains her party room membership but not her candidacy
- Legal challenge withdrawn days before the vote
Comparison of Political Outcomes
| Scenario | Impact on Deeming | Impact on Liberal Party |
|---|---|---|
| Runs as independent | May retain seat but loses party support | Split conservative vote, risk losing seat |
| Does not run | Exits politics after November | New candidate selected for region |
| Legal challenge succeeded | Retained endorsement | Internal party conflict continues |
What This Means for Victoria
The disendorsement highlights ongoing tensions within the Victorian Liberal Party. Deeming's accusation and subsequent apology confusion have eroded trust among colleagues. For voters in the Western Metropolitan Region, the November election now presents a choice between the party's new candidate and potentially Deeming as an independent.
Political analysts suggest this could weaken the Liberal Party's chances in a key upper house seat. The party is now focused on damage control and presenting a unified front ahead of the election.
