New Victorian premier Ben Carroll has taken the helm after a dramatic leadership spill, vowing to 'do things differently' and immediately calling for a royal commission into the construction sector. The former education minister was appointed leader of the Victorian Labor party on Tuesday, replacing Jacinta Allan who resigned amid plunging poll numbers and internal party strife.
The Leadership Change and Its Context
Jacinta Allan stepped down after a tumultuous few months at the helm of a government struggling to fend off a rising One Nation ahead of November's state election. The caucus meeting was chaotic, but ultimately Ben Carroll secured the position, promising a fresh direction for the party. His first order of business was to demand a royal commission into the construction industry, a move aimed at addressing corruption and inefficiency in one of Victoria's most critical sectors.

What This Means for Victoria
Carroll's ascension comes at a time of multiple pressures: a housing crisis, cost-of-living concerns, and a recent bird flu outbreak confirmed by CSIRO. Meanwhile, the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) faces a major shakeup after its secretary and president announced surprise departures. The Labor leadership hopes Carroll's moderate reputation and focus on infrastructure can revive voter confidence.
