Sydney Police Officer Boasts About Punching Protester in Leaked Video 2026

A leaked video showing a Sydney police officer boasting about punching a protester during the anti-Herzog demonstration has raised serious questions about police conduct and accountability. The footage, captured on police body-worn cameras, reveals an officer telling colleagues, “I fucking pumped that cunt” and “Then I punched him in the head when he was down,” prompting widespread public concern.

What the Leaked Footage Reveals

The video, which surfaced on social media over the weekend, depicts a male NSW police officer recounting the incident to fellow officers during the February 9 protest at Sydney Town Hall against Israeli President Isaac Herzog’s visit. A female officer is heard laughing and replying, “So funny,” as the male officer describes the assault.

Guardian Australia understands the footage relates to legal proceedings involving a protester who was charged with assaulting police. That protester was among three individuals who had charges against them dropped on Friday, bringing the total to four of the 30 protesters charged in the wake of the protest who have had charges withdrawn.

Context of the Protest and Police Actions

The protest, which drew thousands, was met with a heavy police presence. Multiple videos went viral showing police allegedly punching protesters and dragging Muslim worshippers away while they were praying. Premier Chris Minns previously urged the public “to not look at a 10-second clip without the full context,” but the new footage of officers bragging about the incident has intensified scrutiny.

The leaked video raises critical questions about the conduct of police officers during the protest and whether excessive force was used. It also highlights the importance of body-worn cameras in providing transparency and accountability.

Legal Proceedings and Charges

Three protesters who had their charges withdrawn on Friday were scheduled to face a joint hearing alongside 22 others in July 2027. The withdrawal of charges suggests that the evidence against them, including the bodycam footage, may have been insufficient or that the police actions were deemed unjustified.

This development is significant as it indicates a potential pattern of misconduct by police during the protest. The leaked video could be used as evidence in ongoing legal battles, further undermining public trust in law enforcement.

Comparison of Police Conduct in Protests

To better understand the implications, consider the following comparison of police conduct in recent protests: The background to this story is set out in Sydney Protest Inquiry: Limited Evidence of Violence by Protesters.
