Arsenal Defensive Crisis: Saliba and Timber Sidelined, Transfer 2026

Arsenal are stepping up their push for defensive cover after William Saliba and Jurrien Timber were sidelined, leaving Mikel Arteta with a major headache. The Gunners lost 3-2 to Borussia Dortmund in the Emirates Cup, exposing defensive frailties. With Saliba out for an extended period and Timber weeks away, the club is actively exploring transfer options.

Arsenal's Defensive Injury Crisis

William Saliba suffered a back injury during the World Cup, which has been troubling him since last season. Arteta confirmed Saliba is in rest mode for two weeks, with recovery expected to take time. Jurrien Timber, meanwhile, is progressing but remains weeks away from a return due to a persistent groin issue.

The absence of both defenders has forced Arteta to rely on makeshift options, leading to mistakes in recent friendlies. The manager admitted, "We know that we lost a massive player, the same with Jurrien."

Impact on Arsenal's Season

Saliba's stats when available are incredible, and his absence could derail Arsenal's title ambitions. The club is now prioritizing a new defender in the transfer window, with Ezri Konsa of Aston Villa emerging as a top target.

Transfer Targets and Strategy

Arsenal had a bid for Konsa rejected earlier this summer, but they are expected to return with a new offer. Villa value him at £60m, but with less than two years left on his contract, Arsenal are unwilling to meet that price. Cristian Romero is also on their radar, but negotiations could be complex.

The club is looking for a versatile defender who can play both center-back and right-back, making Konsa an ideal fit. However, Arteta may need to offload players to fund the move.

Comparison of Defensive Options

Each option brings different strengths, but Konsa's Premier League experience makes him the most likely signing.

Key Takeaways for Arsenal Fans

• Saliba and Timber injuries force urgent defensive reinforcements.
• Arsenal's defensive mistakes in friendlies highlight the need for a new signing.
• Ezri Konsa remains the primary target, but a deal hinges on fee negotiations.
• Arteta may adjust tactics to mitigate the absences.
