Best Recent Crime and Thriller Books: A Review Roundup 2026

Looking for the best recent crime and thriller books? Our review roundup covers two standout novels that are perfect for fans of mystery and suspense. From a daring Miss Marple continuation to a clever amateur sleuth mystery, these books deliver twists and turns that will keep you guessing.

Murder at the Grand Alpine Hotel by Lucy Foley

Lucy Foley takes on the daunting task of continuing Agatha Christie's legacy with Murder at the Grand Alpine Hotel, the first Miss Marple continuation novel. Foley transports the beloved spinster sleuth from the quiet English village of St Mary Mead to the opulent Swiss Alps, where a murder has occurred in a gondola cabin. The story employs four narrators and a nonlinear timeline, which somewhat dilutes the tension and delays Miss Marple's active involvement until midway through the book. However, once the hotel is cut off from the outside world, Foley's Miss Marple shines, delivering a solution worthy of Christie herself. This novel is a commendable attempt that will appeal to both longtime fans and new readers.

The Silent Appeal by Janice Hallett

Janice Hallett returns with The Silent Appeal, reuniting readers with the Fairway Players, the amateur dramatic group from her debut, The Appeal. This time, the group is staging The Hollow, a play adapted by Agatha Christie from her novel. Lawyers Charlotte and Femi are drawn into another mystery, blending legal intrigue with theatrical drama. Hallett's signature style of using emails, texts, and other documents to tell the story keeps the pace brisk and the puzzle engaging. Fans of clever, modern mysteries will find this a satisfying read.

FAQ

Is Murder at the Grand Alpine Hotel a faithful Miss Marple continuation?

Yes, Lucy Foley captures the essence of Miss Marple, though the multiple narrators and slower start may feel different from Christie's originals. The solution is satisfying and true to the character.

Do I need to read The Appeal before The Silent Appeal?

While not strictly necessary, reading The Appeal first enhances the experience by providing background on the Fairway Players and the lawyers' previous case.

Which book is better for fans of classic whodunits?

Murder at the Grand Alpine Hotel is more traditional, with a closed-circle setting and a beloved detective. The Silent Appeal is modern but equally puzzling.

Both Murder at the Grand Alpine Hotel and The Silent Appeal are excellent additions to the crime and thriller genre. Whether you prefer a classic whodunit or a contemporary epistolary mystery, these books will keep you entertained. Pick up your copies today and dive into a world of intrigue.
