The DUP has launched a review into what the party knew about Jeffrey Donaldson, a convicted sex offender, sparking widespread political scrutiny. This development comes as DUP leader Gavin Robinson announced an “unprecedented review” led by former senior police officer Jim Gamble of the INEQE Safeguarding Group. The review aims to establish the extent of knowledge within the party regarding Donaldson’s conduct before his conviction.
Background of the Jeffrey Donaldson Case
Jeffrey Donaldson, a former DUP leader, was convicted at Newry Crown Court of 18 sex offences, including one count of rape, relating to the abuse of two women when they were children. The case has raised serious questions about internal party oversight and safeguarding practices. The Northern Ireland Survivor Council has expressed concerns about the independence of the review, noting that INEQE is also conducting a safeguarding review for the Presbyterian Church in Ireland, where Donaldson’s victims had previously disclosed abuse.

The review will examine what party officials knew and when they knew it, as well as any systemic failures that allowed Donaldson’s actions to go unchecked.
