Kids' TV Composers Reveal Secrets Behind Iconic Theme Songs 2026

Kids' TV composers are the unsung heroes behind the earworms that parents can't escape. From Peppa Pig's 10-second jingle to Bluey's heartwarming melody, these theme songs shape childhoods and drive adults crazy. In this exclusive look, six composers confess the secrets of crafting music for children's television.

The Art of Writing a Short, Catchy Theme

Composer Julian Nott, who scored Peppa Pig, Wallace & Gromit, and Bing, explains that a kids' theme must be short, sharp, and memorable. "It had to be fast and fun with a memorable melody," he says. The challenge is fitting a complete musical idea into just 10 seconds, which is shorter than most title sequences.

Nott reveals that the original Peppa Pig theme was a demo recording used for 20 years. "We finally updated it last year but for two decades they used the demo version," he admits. The gaps in the melody were exploited by creator Mark Baker, who inserted oinking sound effects. "We classical musicians tend to laugh at pop writers for only knowing three chords but Peppa has two, which is probably a musical outrage."

Why Composers Use Synths and Samples

With zero budget, Nott relied on synthesisers and samplers. The instrumentation that became iconic—marimbas, timpani, glockenspiel, vibraphone—was chosen because those were the most convincing samples available in the late 1990s. "Peppa took over the world, so I hear my music all the time," he says. "I'm often in a cafe or airport and a child will be playing it on their iPad."

The Unpopularity Paradox: Loving What You Write

Bluey's composer Joff Bush offers a key lesson: "If you're going to write a theme tune, make sure you really like it because you're going to hear it a helluva lot!" This sentiment echoes across the industry. Parents get woken up at 6am by these tunes, and composers must live with them for years. Yet, the best themes are those that can withstand endless replays.

Bush's approach to Bluey focuses on emotional resonance, blending playful orchestration with a warm, family-friendly vibe. The theme sets the tone for the show's gentle humour and life lessons.

Key Takeaways for Aspiring Composers

• Keep it short and catchy—under 30 seconds is ideal.
• Use memorable melodies that can loop without annoyance.
• Embrace limited budgets; creativity thrives with synth samples.
• Collaborate closely with animators to sync music with visuals.
• Prepare for fame—your tune will be heard millions of times.

Financial Realities: Do Theme Songs Make You Rich?

While some composers earn royalties, many work on flat fees, especially for smaller shows. Nott's Peppa Pig pilot was done for free as a favour. However, successful shows can lead to ongoing income through syndication and streaming. Yet, the real reward is seeing your music become part of childhood memories.
