North Korea Sending 50,000 Troops to Russia: Ukraine War Update 2026

North Korea is sending 50,000 troops to Russia, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, marking a significant escalation in the Ukraine war. This announcement, made during his latest briefing, calls for South Korea's support in air defense as Kyiv faces a growing threat from ballistic missiles.

North Korea's Military Deployment to Russia: What We Know

Zelenskyy's statement represents a sharp increase from the estimated 30,000 North Korean soldiers previously reported in July. Kyiv has also confirmed the presence of North Korean missiles on Ukrainian territory, indicating direct military cooperation between Pyongyang and Moscow.

According to Ukraine's military intelligence, a North Korean missile unit has begun deploying personnel and equipment to western Russia. This unit could be equipped with 120 ballistic missiles and six launchers, potentially used for strikes against Ukraine. This deployment follows an earlier contingent of 14,000 North Korean soldiers sent to Russia's Kursk region in 2024, where thousands have been wounded or killed.

Military Aid and Supplies from North Korea

North Korea has supplied Russia with millions of artillery and mortar rounds, sometimes of dangerously low quality, according to Russian milbloggers and troops. Additionally, Pyongyang has provided ballistic missiles, long-range artillery, and multiple-launch rocket systems, as confirmed by Ukrainian and independent assessments.

This partnership is not one-sided. Zelenskyy noted that North Korea will "continue to build its experience in modern warfare, receive licences from Russia, and receive all kinds of military tools from them." This exchange raises concerns about the proliferation of military technology and its impact on regional security.

Ukraine's Call for South Korean Support

Zelenskyy emphasized Ukraine's urgent need for air defense systems, stating, "We would very much like to receive support from South Korea in an area where we have a shortage." He also mentioned readiness to work on a drone deal and other areas, with Ukrainian diplomats already in contact with Seoul.

Ukraine's air defense is under strain due to Russia's increased use of ballistic missiles, which are difficult to intercept without advanced systems like the US-owned Patriot. In response, Ukraine is poised to purchase 70 ATACMS short-range ballistic missiles from Turkey, pending US approval of the resale, according to US congressional documents.
