North Korea Sending 50,000 Troops to Russia: Ukraine War Update 2026

The Ukraine war briefing reveals that North Korea is sending 50,000 troops to Russia, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, marking a significant escalation in the conflict. This deployment, up from an earlier estimate of 30,000, underscores the deepening military alliance between Pyongyang and Moscow. Zelenskyy has called on South Korea to provide air defence support, highlighting Ukraine's critical shortage of high-end interceptors.

North Korea's Growing Military Involvement in Russia

North Korea's troop deployment to Russia is unprecedented, with up to 50,000 soldiers expected to join Russian forces. This follows an initial dispatch of 14,000 troops to the Kursk region in 2024, where thousands have been wounded or killed. The expansion signals a long-term commitment from Pyongyang to support Moscow's war effort, potentially reshaping the balance of power on the battlefield.

According to Ukrainian military intelligence, a North Korean missile unit has begun deploying personnel and equipment to western Russia. This unit could be equipped with 120 ballistic missiles and six launchers, capable of striking targets deep inside Ukraine. The integration of North Korean weaponry and troops poses new challenges for Ukrainian defence forces, who are already stretched thin.

Weapons and Ammunition: A Troubling Alliance

North Korea has supplied Russia with millions of artillery and mortar rounds, along with ballistic missiles, long-range artillery, and multiple-launch rocket systems. However, reports from Russian milbloggers and troops indicate that some of this ammunition is of dangerously low quality, potentially causing malfunctions or reduced effectiveness. Despite this, the sheer volume of supplies has helped sustain Russia's offensive operations.

Zelenskyy confirmed that Kyiv had found North Korean missiles on Ukrainian territory, proving the direct impact of this alliance. He emphasized that North Korea will continue to build its experience in modern warfare, receiving licenses and military tools from Russia. This exchange not only prolongs the war but also enhances North Korea's military capabilities, with global security implications.

Ukraine's Urgent Need for Air Defence

Ukraine is desperately short of high-end air defence systems, particularly interceptors like the US-owned Patriot. Russia has exploited this vulnerability by deploying more ballistic missiles, which are notoriously difficult to shoot down. Zelenskyy has appealed to South Korea for support in this area, stating, "We are ready to work on the drone deal and other areas as well." Ukrainian diplomats are in contact with Seoul to push potential deals forward.

In a separate development, Ukraine is poised to purchase 70 ATACMS short-range ballistic missiles from Turkey, according to US congressional documents. However, the resale would require US approval, adding another layer of complexity to Ukraine's procurement efforts. The addition of these missiles could provide a much-needed boost to Ukraine's strike capabilities.
