Why This Chart Matters
This visual representation helps readers understand the scale of loss in the Odyssey. It highlights the theme of hubris versus fate, as many deaths result from the crew's own folly or divine punishment. The chart also serves as a reference for students and enthusiasts of Greek mythology.
Methodology and Sources
We relied on the Homeric text, particularly the Iliad for ship crew sizes (50–120), and a Literature Stack Exchange answer that compiles casualties. The starting crew estimate of 52 per ship aligns with a penteconter's oarsmen. The timeline weights Calypso's island as seven years and Circe's as one, while other events are approximate.
Key Takeaways
- Odysseus loses his entire crew, fulfilling Tiresias's prophecy.
- Most deaths occur in clusters, not gradually.
- Elpenor's death is the only one caused by pure accident.
- The chart reveals the crew's dwindling numbers from 624 to 1.
