The olive oil price rise is expected to continue as European crops suffer from extreme heat, drought, and wildfires, driving production costs higher and threatening global supply. Farmers across the continent are reporting significant losses in everything from salads to cereals, with olive groves particularly vulnerable to the climate crisis.

Why Olive Oil Prices Are Climbing Again

Olive oil has already been at elevated levels due to previous poor harvests, and now the latest heatwaves are set to push prices even higher. The Mediterranean region, which produces most of the world's olive oil, is experiencing record temperatures that stress olive trees and reduce fruit yield. According to the European Union, harvest predictions for sunflowers – another key cooking oil – have been cut by 7%, while grain maize is down 6%.

The impact is not limited to oils. The vegetable growers association Légumes de France has warned that thousands of tonnes of products worth tens of millions of euros have been lost, including salad leaves, carrots, leeks, garlic, and onions. Production on certain crops could be halved due to lack of rain.

Extreme Weather Affects Wine and Cereals Too

In France, scorching temperatures have held back grape growth in wine regions like Champagne, Bordeaux, and Burgundy. Producers in Champagne expect the earliest harvest ever, with picking likely to start around 15 August – about a month earlier than typical decades ago. Growers now expect grape yields to be about 10% smaller than last year, according to Reuters.

Spain, the world's largest olive oil producer, is also suffering. The ministry of agriculture predicts the country's 2026-27 cereal crop will fall from last year's 24 million tonnes to little more than 18.5 million tonnes – a forecast made before wildfires took their toll. Even though Spanish farmers are more adapted to hot dry conditions, growing crop varieties that can cope with higher temperatures and using irrigation, the extreme weather is overwhelming their efforts.

How This Affects Your Grocery Bill

The ripple effect of these crop failures is already visible in supermarkets. Olive oil prices have been rising steadily, and this new shock will likely push them higher. Consumers may also see increases in other staples like sunflower oil, cereals, and even wine. The European Union has cut harvest predictions on a whole menu of crops, with potatoes and soya beans trimmed by 3%.

However, not all regions are equally affected. Romania has seen more rainfall, and Italy's wheat crop has proven resilient. But the overall trend is concerning, as climate change makes extreme weather events more frequent and severe.

  • Watch for wine price increases due to smaller harvests in France.
  • Support climate-resilient farming practices to mitigate future shocks.
  • Buy in bulk or look for discounts to manage costs.
