Climate scientists are urging Prime Minister Andy Burnham to ban new North Sea oil drilling at the Jackdaw and Rosebank oilfields, citing his own ambitious climate pledges made as mayor of Greater Manchester. The open letter, signed by leading academics from the Tyndall Centre, warns that approving these projects would signal a profound departure from the UK's international climate commitments.
Why the North Sea Oil Drilling Ban Is Critical
The Jackdaw and Rosebank fields were approved under the Conservatives but put on hold after a court ruling demanded a fuller environmental impact assessment, including the climate effects of burning extracted fossil fuels. Scientists argue that approving them now would undermine the UK's credibility on climate action.

The Scientists' Letter to the Prime Minister
Professor Kevin Anderson and colleagues from the University of Manchester wrote that they view the reports of approval "with considerable concern." They emphasize that the UK must cut global emissions by 8% annually to meet the Paris Agreement's 2°C upper limit, especially amid extreme heat and wildfires across Europe this summer.
Comparing Jackdaw and Rosebank: Key Facts
| Oilfield | Status | Environmental Concern |
|---|---|---|
| Jackdaw | Awaiting consultation (ends Aug 8) | High emissions from extraction and combustion |
| Rosebank | On hold after legal challenge | Requires full climate impact assessment |
What the Labour Manifesto Promised
Labour's manifesto promised no new oil and gas licences, but Jackdaw and Rosebank were already in the system before the election. The prime minister must decide whether to honor his past climate pledges or bow to industry pressure.
Key Takeaways for Climate Policy
- Approving new North Sea drilling contradicts the UK's net-zero goals.
- Scientists demand a full climate assessment before any decision.
- Public opinion is shifting toward stronger climate action.
- International credibility is at stake if the UK backtracks.
Frequently Asked Questions
