Pochettino US Return: Risky, Expensive, Unnecessary 2026

Mauricio Pochettino's US return is risky, expensive, and probably unnecessary, as the Argentine coach has agreed to extend his contract with US Soccer through the 2030 World Cup. After a successful first spell that included a memorable 4-1 win over Paraguay at the 2026 World Cup, the decision to bring him back raises questions about cost, commitment, and long-term strategy.

Why Pochettino's First Stint Was a Success

When Pochettino took over in September 2024, the US men's national team (USMNT) was in need of a spark. He brought energy, a clear tactical system, and a style that suited a generation of players with unprecedented pedigree. Under his guidance, the team delivered two excellent performances and two very good ones at the World Cup, including that stunning victory over Paraguay.

Key Achievements Under Pochettino

• Revitalized a stagnant squad and improved team morale.
• Implemented a possession-based attacking style that maximized player strengths.
• Developed young talents and integrated them into the senior setup.
• Secured a historic World Cup group-stage performance, despite the round-of-16 exit.

The Cost and Risk of a Second Contract

Pochettino's new deal runs through 2030, but the financial terms are reportedly hefty. US Soccer is investing heavily in a coach who may have other ambitions. The risk is that Pochettino could leave mid-cycle if a top European club comes calling, as he has previously managed Tottenham Hotspur, Paris Saint-Germain, and Chelsea.

The decision also ignores the possibility that a fresh voice could take the team further. The USMNT's elimination against Belgium exposed tactical vulnerabilities that a different coach might address. Moreover, the meddlesome involvement of the federation president in the Balogun suspension saga suggests off-field distractions could recur.

Comparison: Pochettino vs. Potential Alternatives

Why It's Probably Unnecessary

The USMNT's talent pool is deeper than ever, with players in top European leagues. A new coach could build on Pochettino's foundation without the baggage of a failed World Cup run. The federation could also invest in a sporting director to oversee long-term development, rather than tying up resources in one coach.

Furthermore, the 2030 World Cup is four years away. Much can change in that time, including player form, injuries, and the emergence of new coaching candidates. Locking in Pochettino now may limit flexibility and create complacency.

Key Takeaways

• Pochettino's first term was largely successful, but the World Cup exit was disappointing.
• The new contract is expensive and may not guarantee results.
• There is a real risk Pochettino leaves for a club job before 2030.
• US Soccer could have explored other options to build on progress.
