The Polish-Ukrainian dispute over history has escalated into a bitter conflict that threatens the solidarity forged after Russia's 2022 invasion. Millions of Poles initially mobilized to help Ukrainian refugees, but four years later, the relationship is strained by a deep historical grievance over the Volyn massacre of 1943.
Background of the Volyn Massacre
The Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) was responsible for the massacre of about 100,000 Poles in Volyn, western Ukraine, during World War II. In Poland, this event is widely considered a genocide, while in Ukraine, the UPA is primarily remembered for its fight against Soviet rule. This historical dispute has resurfaced as a major political issue.
