Rejoin EU Party's Clacton Campaign Challenges Farage and Binface 2026

The Rejoin EU party is mounting a serious challenge in the Clacton byelection, offering voters a credible pro-European alternative to Nigel Farage and the novelty candidate Count Binface. While much of the media focuses on the joke candidacy, John Stevens, a former Conservative MEP, is running a professional, constituency-wide campaign to give Clacton residents a genuine voice on Brexit.

The Real Choice in Clacton: Farage, Binface, or Rejoin EU?

With 34 candidates on the ballot, the Clacton byelection on 13 August is far from a two-horse race. Yet the political and media class have framed it as a binary duel between Reform UK leader Nigel Farage and the satirical Count Binface. This narrative overlooks the serious campaign led by John Stevens of the Rejoin EU party, who insists that many Clacton voters dislike Farage and regret Brexit.

Stevens, an ardent pro-European, has assembled a dedicated team of volunteers and a well-organised agent. Their goal is not to provide comic relief but to offer a substantive political alternative. As one volunteer told me, "We're here to remind people that Brexit is not a settled issue—it's a living disaster that affects their jobs, their communities, and their future."

Why the Media Misses the Real Story

The media's obsession with Count Binface—from BBC Radio 4's Thought for the Day to podcast interviews with Alastair Campbell and Rory Stewart—has overshadowed the Rejoin EU party's message. This is a disservice to the voters of Clacton, who deserve to hear a serious debate about the UK's future relationship with Europe.

Stevens argues that pro-Europeans have been hiding their message behind a bin, a metaphor for how satire has replaced substance in British political discourse. "We need to stop laughing and start listening," he told me. "The people of Clacton are not a punchline; they are citizens with real concerns."

Comparing the Candidates: Farage vs. Binface vs. Stevens

The table above illustrates the stark differences. While Farage and Stevens run serious campaigns, Binface's candidacy is designed to mock the political process. Yet the media's coverage suggests that Binface is the only alternative to Farage, which is misleading and unfair to Stevens and his team.

Key Takeaways from the Clacton Byelection

• The Clacton byelection features 34 candidates, but the media focuses on only two: Farage and Binface.
• John Stevens of the Rejoin EU party is running a professional, constituency-wide campaign.
• Pro-European voters in Clacton have a real choice, not just a satirical one.
• The media's focus on Binface undermines serious political debate.
• Brexit remains a live issue for many voters, contrary to the 'done deal' narrative.

Why Pro-Europeans Need a Real Voice

Stevens's campaign is not just about one byelection; it's about the broader pro-European movement in the UK. By hiding behind satire, pro-Europeans risk alienating voters who want serious answers. Stevens believes that the Rejoin EU party can fill that gap, offering a platform for those who believe the UK's future lies within the European Union.

"We are not a protest vote," Stevens emphasised. "We are a solution. The EU is not perfect, but it is the best framework we have for peace, prosperity, and collaboration. The people of Clacton deserve to hear that case."

The Role of Satire in Politics

Satire has a long tradition in British politics, from the parables of Jesus Christ to the modern-day Count Binface. However, satire can also trivialise important issues. The Rejoin EU party's campaign aims to strike a balance, using humour where appropriate but never losing sight of the serious stakes involved.

As the byelection approaches, the question remains: will the voters of Clacton choose a joke or a genuine alternative? Stevens and his team are working tirelessly to ensure that the Rejoin EU option is not ignored.

FAQ: Clacton Byelection and the Rejoin EU Party

In conclusion, the Clacton byelection is a test not only for Farage but for the entire pro-European movement. Will they continue to hide behind a bin, or will they step forward with the courage of their convictions? The voters of Clacton deserve a real choice, and John Stevens is offering exactly that.
