Florida Alligator Attack Autopsy Reveals Brutal Injuries 2026

The Florida alligator attack autopsy report for Brittany Clark reveals the brutal extent of injuries she sustained during a rare encounter in the Econlockhatchee River. The report, released on Thursday, details near complete traumatic amputations and multiple bite marks, underscoring the dangers of swimming in known alligator habitats.

Autopsy Findings: Extent of Injuries

The 11-page autopsy report, conducted by Orange County Associate Medical Examiner Jenaye Mack, confirmed that Clark died from multiple blunt force injuries inflicted by the alligator. The report noted the near complete traumatic amputation of her left arm at the shoulder and her right forearm, along with teeth marks on her left shoulder blade and collarbone.

Clark's boyfriend, Chance Allison, identified her body at Orlando Regional Medical Center. The manner of death was ruled an accident, but the violent nature of the attack highlights the physical power of these reptiles.

Alligator Size and DNA Evidence

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) officials removed two alligators from the river—measuring 12 and 13 feet in length—and euthanized them. DNA testing linked the longer alligator to Clark, confirming it was the attacker. This evidence is crucial for understanding attack patterns and preventing future incidents.

Rarity of Alligator Attacks in Florida

Alligator attacks on humans are rare in Florida, according to the FWC, which estimates the state's alligator population at around 1.3 million. In 2022, the agency reported an average of about eight unprovoked bites per year, but fatalities are even less common. Still, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks in freshwater habitats.

Safety Tips for Swimmers and Hikers

To minimize risk, experts recommend the following precautions:

• Never swim outside designated swimming areas, especially at dawn or dusk when alligators are most active.
• Keep pets on a leash and away from water's edge, as they can attract alligators.
• Do not feed alligators—it's illegal and makes them lose their natural fear of humans.
• Be cautious in marshy or vegetated areas where alligators may nest.
• If you see an alligator, keep a safe distance of at least 60 feet.

Comparison of Alligator Attack Statistics

These numbers, provided by the FWC, show that while bites occur, fatalities are extremely rare. However, each incident is tragic, and understanding the circumstances can help improve public safety.

Emergency Response and Aftermath

Emergency responders transported Clark to the hospital, but she succumbed to her injuries. The FWC's swift action to remove and test the alligators demonstrates their commitment to investigating such incidents. The autopsy report also serves as a somber reminder of the power of wildlife.

Key Takeaways

• Alligator attacks are rare but can be fatal, as seen in this case.
• Autopsy reports provide critical details for understanding attack mechanics.
• DNA testing helps confirm the responsible animal.
• Awareness and avoidance are the best prevention strategies.
