Lando Norris Takes F1 Hungarian GP Pole, Hamilton Penalized 2026

The F1 Hungarian GP qualifying delivered a thrilling climax as Lando Norris snatched pole position from Lewis Hamilton by a mere one-hundredth of a second. The defending world champion's last‑lap heroics were overshadowed by a grid penalty for Hamilton, who will now start from fifth place after impeding Oscar Piastri.

Dramatic Qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix

For a moment, it seemed Lewis Hamilton had finally found his edge in qualifying. The seven‑time champion was on a blistering lap, only for Norris to pip him at the very end. The margins were tiny, but the outcome reshuffled the front of the grid.

Hamilton’s joy was short‑lived. The stewards ruled he had impeded McLaren’s Oscar Piastri during the final runs, handing him a three‑place grid penalty. Hamilton expressed surprise, stating he was unaware Piastri was on a hot lap behind him. “I was told when he was at the apex behind me, so I had no idea he was coming,” he said. “It wasn’t intentional.”

Grid Penalties Shake Up the Starting Order

Hamilton’s penalty drops him from second to fifth, promoting Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) to second and Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes) to third. However, Antonelli also received a three‑place penalty for failing to slow under yellow flags, meaning he will start sixth. This leaves the top five as: Norris, Leclerc, Piastri, Verstappen, and Hamilton.

Championship Implications

Antonelli leads the drivers’ championship by 45 points over Hamilton and 50 over George Russell. With Hamilton struggling to close the gap, every race weekend becomes more critical. Norris’s pole position gives McLaren a strong opportunity to reduce the deficit to Mercedes in the constructors’ standings.
