Abdul El-Sayed, the Michigan Democratic Senate candidate, clarified that his controversial 'ogre' remark was directed at Senator John Fetterman, not his primary opponent Representative Haley Stevens. In a final televised debate before the August 4 primary, El-Sayed addressed the leaked audio in which he suggested progressives need to “put one ogre on a pike” to send a message.
El-Sayed Explains the Ogre Comment
During the debate, moderator Roop Raj asked El-Sayed if he regretted the comments, which many interpreted as a sexist attack on Stevens. El-Sayed responded by naming Fetterman as the target: “I was referring to a guy named John Fetterman, who’s a senator from Pennsylvania who has done terrible things, got elected on a set of values, and is now completely throwing those values in the mud.” He emphasized his frustration with Fetterman’s shift to the right on issues like Israel.
