For Dolores review captures the intense dependency and desire within an obsessive friendship, as Eva O’Connor’s new play for Fishamble Theatre Company delves into the complicated bonds between young women. The story follows Mo and Réaltín, whose relationship mirrors the challenges of “chosen family” during a therapy session with the audience as therapist.
Exploring Obsessive Friendship in For Dolores
O’Connor, known for writing about compulsion, vividly portrays the mix of love, admiration, and desire that fuels young women’s friendships. The play opens with the pair’s comical first meeting as university students in Edinburgh, where their contrasting personalities—spiky, politicized Mo versus naive, middle-class Réaltín—cement a powerful bond. Performances by Catriona Faint and Lara McDonnell are committed and passionate, bringing authenticity to every scene.

Key Themes and Performances
Director Jim Culleton sensitively highlights the subtle differences between loving and being “in love,” especially as Réaltín becomes engaged to a wealthy Finnish man after college. The fallout is catastrophic, with tension building through monologues, dance moves, and blunt humor. Denis Clohessy’s sound design underscores the climax, while Alyson Cummins’s set—a raised platform atop discarded bottles and junk—reveals the detritus swept under the carpet.
