The Hit Machine review of this slick music biz drama reveals a production that strikes too many false notes despite its star-studded cast. On paper, writer Jonathan Caren’s Hit Machine has all the makings of a chart-topping smash, featuring the London stage debuts of Josh Radnor and Noah Galvin, direction by Daniel Bailey, and music by Grammy-winning bluesman Ben Harper. The three-hander tackles masculinity, appropriation, and buried family trauma through the prism of the creative process, set in the louche home of music mogul Wes.
Plot and Performances in Hit Machine
The play begins promisingly as wayward younger brother Alex arrives and throws a plaid-shirted bomb into Wes’s carefully manicured life. We see how each sibling plays their role in the strained family dynamic: Wes the high-achiever on the hedonic treadmill, and Alex the sprightly yet secretive youngster striving for approval. Music is the source of Wes’s success and the medium through which the brothers bonded during difficult childhood years.

Strengths and Weaknesses
When Caren’s script injects more drama, the engaging realism falls apart. Galvin veers from ebullience to crazed mania, while Radnor switches from fatherly to loathing. The solutions feel singular rather than digging into the messy complexity of childhood trauma. Khalil Madovi’s brief appearance as Defy the Leader brings intrigue, but his discussion of societal expectations on Black men again touches on themes without depth.
