Holy Days Review: Star-Studded Nun Cast Can't Save This Film 2026

The Holy Days review reveals a frustratingly lukewarm road movie, where even the legendary trio of Judy Davis, Miriam Margolyes, and Jacki Weaver as nuns cannot salvage a disjointed script and emotionally flat narrative. Despite its star power, the film struggles to find its footing between comedy and drama, leaving audiences disconnected from the characters and their mission to save a decaying convent.

Holy Days Review: A Mismatched Cast and a Tepid Script

The premise of Holy Days follows three stubborn, elderly nuns and a young boy, Brian (Elijah Tamati), as they embark on a road trip to find a property deed that could save their convent from developers. The casting is undeniably impressive, with each nun portrayed by an icon of stage and screen. However, the performances feel phoned in, lacking the energy and spark that these actresses are known for.

The script, adapted by Nat Boltt from Dame Joy Cowley's novel, aims for a heartwarming tone but instead delivers something syrupy and sentimental. The film's attempts at humor fall flat, and its dramatic moments fail to forge any real emotional connection with the audience. The convent itself, meant to be a symbol of heritage and community, comes across as drab and soulless, making it hard to care about its fate.

The Problem with the Road Movie Format

As a road movie, Holy Days surprisingly lacks interesting locations or memorable encounters. The journey feels monotonous, mirroring the emotional stagnation of the characters. The dynamic between the elderly nuns and the young Brian, intended to be the emotional core, feels forced and underdeveloped. Brian's subplot about coping with his mother's death and his father's new partner is introduced but never given enough depth to resonate.

The film's pacing is another issue. It lingers too long on scenes that don't advance the plot or character development, while rushing through moments that could have provided much-needed emotional weight. The result is a viewing experience that feels both overlong and incomplete.

Comparing Holy Days to Other Nun-Centric Films

To understand where Holy Days falls short, it's helpful to compare it to other films featuring nuns or religious themes. The table below highlights key differences in tone, execution, and audience reception.

Key Takeaways from the Holy Days Review

• Star power doesn't guarantee quality – even A-list actresses can't elevate a weak script.
• The film's tone is inconsistent, failing as both a comedy and a drama.
• Lack of compelling locations undermines the road movie genre.
• Character development is shallow, especially for the young protagonist Brian.
• The convent setting is visually and emotionally unappealing.

Final Verdict on Holy Days

In conclusion, Holy Days is a missed opportunity. With such a talented cast, the film had the potential to be a moving exploration of faith, community, and intergenerational friendship. Instead, it delivers a forgettable and frustrating experience. The film's earnestness cannot compensate for its lack of humor, drama, or emotional depth. For fans of Judy Davis, Miriam Margolyes, or Jacki Weaver, this is a disappointing entry in their filmographies.
