Jon McConnell is chasing Commonwealth Games treasure after rejecting Love Island, and now he is one win away from a medal. The Northern Irish boxer defeated India’s Sumit Sumit 4-1 to reach the 70kg quarter-finals in Glasgow. McConnell made headlines for turning down the 13th season of the reality show, but he insists boxing comes first.
The Love Island Controversy
When news broke that McConnell had been approached for Love Island auditions, the boxing world was surprised. Speaking after his victory, he admitted, “I didn’t expect the attention at all. Someone sent me the interview and I was a wee bit shocked.” The 23-year-old said it happened after a sparring session, and he just went along with the banter. But his focus remains clear: “Boxing comes first. Skills pay the bills.”
