Man Arrested in Athens Suitcase Death of Scottish Woman 2026

A man has been arrested in Athens after the body of Scottish woman Elisabeth-Jane Ross was discovered inside a suitcase in an abandoned building, marking a tragic turn in a case that has shocked both Greece and the UK. The 38-year-old charity worker, described as an “angel full of innocence and goodness,” had been in Greece for nearly three weeks before her death.

Arrest Made in Connection with Suitcase Death

Greek authorities have taken a 26-year-old Afghan national into custody, with police sources confirming he allegedly confessed to the crime. The suspect was brought in for questioning by Greece’s homicide division last Thursday, two days after Ross’s body was publicly identified. On Sunday, police released a statement saying a criminal file had been opened for intentional homicide, robbery, and violation of weapons laws.

Security officials noted that both real and fake firearms were discovered at the suspect’s home, which is also located in the downtown Kypseli area where the body was found. The suspect is expected to be formally charged on Monday, according to Greek authorities.

Investigation Details and Key Evidence

Investigators faced initial challenges, but a crucial breakthrough came from the suspect’s alleged use of Ross’s credit cards. Sources told the Guardian that the suspect was captured on ATM cameras withdrawing money using cards belonging to Ross, which played a significant role in leading police to him. The investigation has involved close cooperation between Greek authorities, the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA), and Police Scotland.

Ross, who had strong ties to the charity sector in Greece, was the daughter of a prominent Edinburgh lawyer. She was reported to have friends in Kypseli, where her body was discovered on 18 July by a homeless man in what had once been a car park. The body was wrapped in cloth and placed in a suitcase left in a decrepit, rubbish-strewn building at the site.
