The NWSL reached a new milestone with Gotham FC's 1-0 win over the Washington Spirit at Citi Field, drawing 42,175 fans and setting a record for the most attended women's sporting event in New York City history. This match, dubbed the Queens Classic, showcased the league's explosive growth from humble beginnings at minor-league ballparks just a decade ago.
Record-Breaking Attendance and Star Performances
The crowd at Citi Field was the second-largest in NWSL history, following recent sellouts at Wrigley Field and Oracle Park. Rose Lavelle, the standout Gotham midfielder who scored the winning goal in last year's final, delivered a brilliant curler in the 37th minute for the night's lone goal. Trinity Rodman of the Spirit captivated fans with five shots but couldn't find the net.

However, the match also highlighted lingering controversies, including questionable officiating and player safety concerns.
