Remembering Karl: The Tabby Cat Who Went to College and Learned 2026

Remembering Karl, the tabby cat who went to college and learned to use the toilet, is a story that captures the unique bond between pets and their humans. This remarkable feline not only mastered a human-like skill but also became a beloved figure in his community, leaving a lasting legacy of love and connection.

The Unforgettable Karl: A Tabby with a College Education

Karl was no ordinary cat. While most felines are content with scratching posts and chasing toys, Karl took his talents to new heights—literally. During his time at Camberwell College of Arts in south London, Karl picked up an extraordinary skill: using the toilet. This was not just a party trick; it was a testament to his intelligence and adaptability. As his owner recalls, Karl would climb onto the seat, lift his tail, and aim directly into the bowl, a feat that amazed everyone who witnessed it.

But Karl's uniqueness didn't stop there. He was a cat who formed deep connections with people. He accompanied children on school runs, waited patiently at the top of the road, and engaged in daily "chats" with neighbors. His ability to remember routines and anticipate pats made him a cherished presence on the street.

Karl's Impact on the Neighborhood

Karl's social nature extended beyond his immediate family. He was the unofficial neighborhood watch, sitting in the front garden and observing the comings and goings. He knew when to be waiting for his daily pats, and he formed bonds with neighbors that his owner never even knew about. This cat was a bridge between people, fostering a sense of community in a quiet street.

His tragic death in 2008, when he was mauled by an unruly dog, brought the neighborhood together in grief. Neighbors rushed to the scene, and his funeral that same night was attended by many who had loved him. It was a fitting tribute to a cat who had given so much to so many.

Toilet Training Cats: A Unique Skill

Karl's ability to use the toilet is a rare and fascinating behavior. While most cats can be trained to use a litter box, toilet training requires patience and consistency. Here are some key points to consider if you're thinking about toilet training your cat:

• Start gradually: Begin by placing the litter box near the toilet, then gradually raise it to toilet height.
• Use a training seat: Specialized training seats with a small opening can help your cat transition.
• Be patient: Cats learn at their own pace; some may take weeks or months to master the skill.
• Consider your cat's personality: Not all cats are suited for toilet training; some may find it stressful.
