Shin Kamen Rider delivers a thrilling blend of nostalgia and modern filmmaking, as director Hideaki Anno brings the iconic grasshopper-man hybrid to life in a gritty, action-packed reboot. This 2023 film is the final chapter of Anno's Shin trilogy, following Shin Godzilla and Shin Ultraman, and it captures the essence of tokusatsu with a dark, philosophical twist.
Plot Overview: A Man-Grasshopper Fights the System
The story follows Takeshi Hongo, a young man kidnapped by the evil organization Shocker and transformed into a horrifically strong grasshopper-human hybrid. Rescued by a renegade employee, Hongo teams up with Ruriko Midorikawa to dismantle Shocker one bloody showdown at a time. Along the way, they encounter other augmented beings and confront the corruption that plagues humanity.

Hideaki Anno's Unique Directorial Vision
As the visionary behind Neon Genesis Evangelion, Anno infuses Shin Kamen Rider with his trademark cynicism and hope. The film balances biting critiques of bureaucracy (echoing Shin Godzilla) with an optimistic insistence on fighting for good (like Shin Ultraman). This tonal duality makes the film both thought-provoking and exhilarating.
Comparison of the Shin Trilogy

Why Shin Kamen Rider Stands Out
Unlike typical superhero fare, this film doesn't offer a clean victory. Instead, it forces the audience to grapple with uncomfortable truths about power and corruption. The performances, especially Sosuke Ikematsu as Takeshi Hongo and Minami Hamabe as Ruriko, ground the fantastical plot in genuine emotion. Fans of tokusatsu and Anno's previous work will find plenty to admire here.
