The Sibelius Violin Concerto took center stage at a recent BBC Philharmonic Proms concert, with South Korean violinist Sueye Park delivering a poetic debut that captivated the Royal Albert Hall audience. Under the baton of John Storgårds, the orchestra maintained a light, responsive touch, allowing Park's silvery tone to shine through the hall's ambient noise.
Sueye Park's Poetic Sibelius Violin Concerto
Park owned the cornerstone work from start to finish. Her lean, penetrating sound drew listeners into the first movement's romantic sweep, while the finale erupted with laser-focused, ethereal fireworks. Storgårds kept orchestral volume on a low simmer, perhaps unnecessarily, but Park's musical storytelling proved enthralling.

Storgårds and BBC Philharmonic: A Light Touch
Earlier in the evening, Betsy Jolas's Tales of a Summer Sea (1977) painted a seascape of louring gong and timpani, with woozy strings and woodwind textures flecked by tom-toms, vibraphone and celesta. Though at 15 minutes it took its time, seven busy percussionists kept things eventful.
Richard Strauss's Also Sprach Zarathustra
Strauss's monumental tone poem fit the Albert Hall perfectly. The subterranean organ turbocharged the opening fanfares, while burnished strings tugged at the heart in 'Of the Great Longing'. Placing the bell high in the gallery was a neat touch for Nietzsche's deep midnight. The dance song lacked the last degree of Viennese schmaltz, but overall it was a stylish and dramatically assured performance.
Jupiter Ensemble's Idiosyncratic Late-Night Proms
Following the main concert, lutenist Thomas Dunford and his Jupiter Ensemble made a singularly idiosyncratic Proms debut, offering a refreshing palate cleanser with their singalong style.
