Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey has garnered near universal acclaim from critics, positioning the $250 million IMAX blockbuster as a frontrunner for next year's Best Picture Oscar. Based on Homer's epic poem, the film is being hailed as one of Nolan's greatest achievements.
Critical Reception: A Masterpiece in Every Way
The Guardian's Peter Bradshaw awarded the film five stars, calling it a work "with thrilling ambition, boldness, seriousness, generosity and flair." He noted that even the broad-brush dialogue moments are applied "with a muscular flourish." This is the artwork." New York Times critic Manohla Dargis praised Nolan's passion for cinema "in every frame of his monumental adaptation," calling it "one of the most Nolan of Nolan spectacles."
What Makes The Odyssey Stand Out
Guy Lodge, chief critic of Variety, wrote that The Odyssey is "a genuinely grand, gutsy vision" that thrills generously across its near three-hour runtime. He highlighted the film's ability to deliver "mighty set pieces" that would be climactic standouts in any other summer spectacle. The film's thematic depth and formal playfulness have drawn comparisons to Nolan's previous works like Inception and Interstellar.
