The White House has backed Argentina's footballers who displayed a banner supporting their country's claim to the Falkland Islands after their World Cup semi-final victory against England, sparking a major political controversy. The banner, reading "Las Malvinas son Argentinas," was held up by players following a 2-1 win in Atlanta, drawing swift reactions from UK leaders. This incident highlights the intersection of sports and international diplomacy, with the US defending free speech amid calls for FIFA action.
White House Defense of Argentina's Free Speech
Andrew Giuliani, head of the White House FIFA taskforce, publicly supported Argentina's players, emphasizing America's commitment to First Amendment rights. He stated, "We believe in our first amendment rights here in the United States of America," and noted that players would have the "opportunity to be able to make statements" in the US. This stance contrasts sharply with UK officials' calls for an investigation.

UK Officials Condemn the Banner
Keir Starmer, the UK prime minister, supported calls for FIFA to investigate the incident, while his spokesperson reiterated, "The World Cup might not be ours, but the Falkland Islands definitely are." Business secretary Peter Kyle described the banner as "an egregious violation of the rules of not having political activity as part of the football." The UK maintains that the islands' self-determination is non-negotiable.
