The Trump administration and its congressional allies must stop the public harassment of Fauci and other scientists, according to an open letter signed by over 155 scientists, physicians, and public health advocates. The letter, published ahead of Dr. Anthony Fauci's subpoenaed testimony before a Senate committee, condemns what it calls a coordinated campaign of vilification and intimidation.
Open Letter Details: Scientists United Against Harassment
The signatories argue that the targeting of individual scientists undermines public trust in science and threatens the integrity of research. They specifically cite Dr. Fauci, the former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), as the most prominent target. The letter dismisses allegations against Fauci as "baseless", including claims that he covered up the origins of COVID-19 or that NIAID-funded research sparked the pandemic.

Key Allegations in the Open Letter
- The Trump administration is waging a war on scientists through public harassment, arrests, and criminal indictments.
- Dr. Fauci has faced relentless attacks from Senator Rand Paul and other lawmakers.
- The investigation into COVID-19 origins has been politicized, distracting from genuine scientific inquiry.
Comparison: Public Scrutiny vs. Harassment
While scientists expect rigorous debate, the letter distinguishes between legitimate scrutiny and targeted intimidation. A quick comparison highlights the difference:
| Legitimate Scientific Debate | Harassment Tactics |
|---|---|
| Peer review and published critiques | Public shaming and character assassination |
| Subpoena for testimony with due process | Baseless accusations spread via media |
| Transparent funding and research data | Threats of prosecution without evidence |
Dr. Fauci's Upcoming Testimony
Dr. Fauci, now 85, is set to appear before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee on Wednesday under subpoena. The committee, chaired by Senator Rand Paul, is investigating the origins of the virus and whether federal officials misled the public. Fauci, who led NIAID for 38 years, left federal service in 2022.
What This Means for Science Policy
The open letter warns that such public harassment of scientists could deter future researchers from pursuing public health work. It calls on the administration to cease these actions and refocus on evidence-based policy.
