France Spain Wildfires Rage: 270,000 Evacuated, One Dead 2026

France Spain wildfires continue to devastate regions across southwestern Europe, forcing the evacuation of over 270,000 people and claiming at least one life near Valencia. Firefighters and military units are scrambling to contain multiple blazes as extreme heat and shifting winds fuel the crisis.

Wildfire Crisis in France and Spain

The situation remains critical in both countries. In Spain, a man was found dead in a car in a ravine near Manises, west of Valencia, according to the interior ministry. Meanwhile, France has seen 197,000 people evacuated near Bordeaux, including suburbs of the city. The French armed forces have deployed 1,500 soldiers to support firefighters with evacuations, medical care, transport, and logistical support. Specialist equipment such as bulldozers, helicopters, drones, and A400M military aircraft equipped for aerial firefighting are being used to contain the flames.

Evacuation Numbers and Casualties

The scale of displacement is staggering. Spain reports 70,000 evacuations from villages west of Madrid, while France counts 197,000 near Bordeaux. The Spanish interior ministry confirmed one fatality, and authorities warn that more could follow as temperatures remain high and winds unpredictable.

Spain’s prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, described the wildfire situation near Madrid as “complex” during a visit to affected areas. “We don’t know how the wind will develop, even though temperatures have dropped,” he said.

Military Response and International Support

France has significantly expanded its military response. The armed forces are supplying bulldozers, helicopters, drones, and A400M aircraft for aerial firefighting. French prime minister Sébastien Lecornu convened a new government crisis meeting on the wildfires in southwestern France. In Scotland, the first minister has asked for military aid from the UK government as over 500 firefighters tackle a separate fire in the Cairngorms national park that has raged for 11 days.

More than 400 emergency personnel are working to contain the wildfire west of the Spanish capital, according to Madrid’s emergency agency ASEM112.

How to Stay Safe During Wildfire Season
