France Wildfires Force 250,000 Evacuations in Spain, France 2026

France wildfires have forced more than 250,000 people to flee their homes across Spain and France, marking one of the largest peacetime evacuations in modern European history. The blazes, fueled by intense heatwaves and the climate crisis, have overwhelmed firefighting resources and prompted national emergencies in both countries.

Scale of the Wildfires in France and Spain

In Spain, approximately 70,000 residents were evacuated from central regions as three major wildfires merged due to high winds. France faced an even larger displacement, with 197,000 people evacuating, including tens of thousands from the wine region city of Bordeaux. The French interior minister described the evacuations as "probably" the biggest such operation in peacetime.

Emergency Response and Military Involvement

France deployed the massive Airbus A400M Atlas military cargo plane to join 18 other aircraft in the battle against wildfires in France. The government also rushed 1.5 million face masks to protect evacuees from smoke inhalation, while firefighters dug trenches and used retardants to slow the flames. In Spain, high winds exacerbated the fires, causing two of the three blazes to merge on Friday.

Impact on Bordeaux and Surrounding Areas

The France wildfires came within 20 miles of Bordeaux, forcing police to go door-to-door urging residents to evacuate. Scenes of panic unfolded as families fled under a smoke-darkened sky. The Gironde regional prefect, Sophie Brocas, stated that the fire had grown to "an unprecedented magnitude" and that strong winds were driving it toward the metro area.
