Gironde Wildfire Evacuation: Surviving France's Massive Blaze 2026

The Gironde wildfire evacuation forced over 220,000 residents from their homes as flames tore through 42,000 hectares of land in southwestern France. Krishma and Nassir, an interpreter and her husband, described the terrifying moment when a black cloud turned the sky dark and a bitter burning smell filled the air. This disaster, one of the largest evacuations in modern French history, left families like theirs sleeping on camp beds in a Bordeaux exhibition center, uncertain when they could return.

How the Gironde Wildfire Escalated

The blaze, which started in the Gironde region, spread rapidly due to extreme heat and dry conditions. By July 2022, it had consumed an area four times the size of Paris, destroying at least 240 homes. Authorities warned that a new heatwave could make firefighting efforts even harder, as the fire continued to burn despite containment attempts.

Evacuation Orders and Impact

Police ordered evacuations from wooded areas and, for the first time, from urban streets as the fire reached within 9 miles (15 km) of Bordeaux's suburban outskirts. Krishma and Nassir had to leave their home at midnight, packing only essentials: toothbrushes, toys, a change of clothes, and personal documents. Their children, aged 10 and 8, were among the many displaced.
