Tour de France 2026: Carapaz Wins Stage 20 on Alpe d'Huez 2026

The Tour de France 2026 delivered an unforgettable stage 20 as Richard Carapaz of EF Education-EasyPost conquered the legendary climb of Alpe d'Huez. Carapaz's solo victory on the iconic mountain came amidst a dramatic day that saw overall leader Tadej Pogacar cement his hold on the yellow jersey. The stage was influenced by wildfire disruptions elsewhere in France, which later shortened the final stage on Sunday.

Stage 20: The Decisive Climb to Alpe d'Huez

The 2026 edition of the Tour de France has been defined by tactical battles and extreme weather. Stage 20, a mountainous 131km route, finished atop the famed 21 hairpin bends of Alpe d'Huez. Carapaz launched his attack early on the final ascent, building a lead that no one could match. He crossed the line in 3 hours 45 minutes, earning a triumphant stage win that added another chapter to his Grand Tour legacy.

Behind him, the battle for time bonuses and podium places intensified. Pogacar rode a controlled race, marking his closest rivals, and finished safely in the main group. The UAE Team Emirates-XRG rider now holds a commanding lead of over six minutes ahead of the final stage.

Wildfire Impact and Stage Shortening

The final stage in Paris on Sunday has been shortened to just 89km due to devastating wildfires in southwestern France. Over 36,000 hectares of forest have been destroyed near Arcachon and Biscarrosse, forcing authorities to redeploy security forces to firefighting efforts. As a result, the stage will start on the Champs-Élysées with only two laps of the avenue and circuits of the Butte Montmartre. This is the third stage of the 2026 Tour altered by wildfires or heatwave conditions.

Points Classification Update

Mads Pedersen of Lidl-Trek has secured the green jersey with an unassailable lead. His total of 527 points places him well ahead of Jasper Philipsen (445) and Biniam Girmay (361). Pedersen's consistency on flat and intermediate stages has been remarkable throughout the race.
