Apple Crumble is a new mystery game from Happy Broccoli Games that puts you in the middle of a family drama where someone wants to kill grandma. Inspired by the film Knives Out, this walking sim lets you snoop through every drawer and door in your family home to uncover secrets. As you explore, you'll learn about the grievances and troubles of your stressed mum, your midlife crisis uncle, and that stranger in your bedroom.
How Apple Crumble Differs from Duck Detective
While Happy Broccoli Games’ previous hit Duck Detective had you solving crimes in a small office, Apple Crumble expands the setting to an entire family home. The game shifts from a confined workspace to a sprawling, lived-in environment filled with hidden details. This change makes the snooping more intimate and personal, as you dig through family belongings to piece together the plot.

According to founder and creative director Annika Maar, the team wanted to make a “sad grandma” game after Duck Detective. The story begins comedically but deepens as you explore the baggage of each family member. “I felt very emotionally attached to the death of my grandma. There’s some baggage there and I thought it would be fun to explore that,” Maar says.
Why Apple Crumble Stands Out
The game’s storytelling is entirely environmental. You pick up the plot by reading letters, checking drawers, and discovering hidden objects like a film script that the uncle believes will attract investors. These small details make the world feel believable and lived-in. The art style, inspired by Puss in Boots, uses paint splatters that blend together from a distance, creating a natural, less clinical look.
Key Takeaways
- Apple Crumble is a walking sim mystery with a strong Knives Out vibe
