Rio Ngumoha Winner Leads Experimental Liverpool Past Wrexham 2026

Rio Ngumoha's deflected goal secured a 2-0 pre-season victory for an experimental Liverpool side against Wrexham at Yankee Stadium, marking a second consecutive win under new head coach Andoni Iraola.

The match, played in front of 42,204 fans, was a low-key affair despite the presence of Wrexham's Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. Liverpool's preparations were disrupted by a cancelled flight from Chicago, delaying their arrival until midday on game day.

Ngumoha's Breakthrough Moment

Seventeen-year-old Rio Ngumoha came on as a second-half substitute and made an immediate impact. His 75th-minute shot looped in off Wrexham defender Lewis Brunt, providing the decisive moment in an otherwise scrappy encounter.

Iraola deployed Ngumoha on the right wing, where the young attacker showed composure beyond his years. The goal was Ngumoha's first for the senior team in pre-season, and it delighted the majority of the crowd.

Youth-Focused Lineup

With key players like Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak, and Ryan Gravenberch unavailable, and injuries to Joe Gomez and Federico Chiesa, Iraola fielded a youthful starting XI. Six players had no Premier League experience, including highly-rated prospect Joshua Abe, who recently committed his future to Liverpool at age 16.

Abe, a pacy right winger, attracted interest from Manchester City and Manchester United before choosing Liverpool. His performance on the night justified the hype, with several promising runs down the flank.

Match Statistics and Comparison

The statistics reflect Liverpool's dominance, though Wrexham's defensive organisation kept the scoreline respectable until Ngumoha's strike. Liverpool's second goal came from a late counter-attack, sealing the win.
